The MV Apprenticeship Coordinators Group with the Dayton Building Trades hosted a Construction Camp June 26-30, 2023, 9 AM – 3 PM daily for 25 middle school students. It was held at the IBEW LU #82 located at 6550 Poe Avenue; Dayton 45414.
The purpose of the Camp was to introduce student campers to possible future careers in the building trades. Each day campers met with apprentice program representatives from various trades to learn of future career opportunities, including: Painters, Finishers, & Glaziers; Plumbers & Pipefitters; Heat & Frost Insulators; Electricians; Sheet Metal Workers; Ironworkers, Laborers, Roofers, Cement Masons, Plasterers, Bricklayers, and Operating Engineers. The Apprentice Program Reps introduced each trade through videos, discussion, and hands on activities including: painting & finishing; trade related math; tube bending; snap circuit projects; tool tray assemble; welding & torch cutting; EDPM pipe wrapping; pouring plaster molds; bricklaying; trowel finishing a concrete slap; and operating a mini excavator. The Campers were also introduced to tools from a presentation by Milwaukee Tool and spoken to of future careers in the Construction Industry from a Representative of Shook Construction.
On Thursday, June 29th, Student Campers were excited with a visit from Senator Sherrod Brown, who has been involved with hosting Manufacturing Camps throughout Ohio, but this is the first Construction Camp held in Ohio. On Friday, June 30th Campers were issued a Completion Certificate signed by the Senator during a “camp graduation.”
The MV Apprenticeship Coordinators Group and the Dayton Building Trades worked closely with ACT Ohio, the Ohio Building Trades Council, the Dayton AFL-CIO, IBEW LU #82, Dayton Public Schools, including its Transportation Department, Montgomery County Educational Services, Classic Catering, the Construction Builders Association, and Senator Brown’s staff to plan and sponsor the event.
