An operating engineer operates construction equipment that assists other tradesman in the construction of roads, bridges, dams, both large and small buildings, and many other structures.

The work of an operating engineer is divided into two general classifications:

Operating Equipment – Used in construction such as dozers, graders, backhoes and cranes.

Repairing and Earth Moving Equipment – Used in the building of roads, bridges, dams and large buildings.

You must:

• Be at least 18 years of age by May 1st in the year you apply
• Possess a high school diploma or GED Certificate
• Have a valid driver’s license and be capable of passing the Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) test
• Complete a background check
• Have dependable transportation
• Be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions
• Pass a drug test

How do I prepare for the trade?

It will be helpful to have completed courses in or possess the following skills:

• Good math skills
• Good reading ability
• Blueprint reading
• Mechanical ability
• Welding

What are the program specifics?

• Length of the program is 4 years
• Probationary period is 450 hours
• Minimum of 160 hours of classroom training each year
• Starting pay is 50% of journeyman wage
